How long do garage door springs last, and why do they break?

Most springs are rated for 10,000–15,000 cycles (roughly 7–12 years of typical use). They break due to normal wear, rust, lack of lubrication, or improper tension. A loud “bang” from the garage is a classic sign of a spring snapping.
